Are You Concerned About the Panting Behavior of Your Pet?

When you own a pet they become a part of you. There is a similar process of bonding between parents and their children.

This is good news because it means that you and your pet love each other. However, this does mean that you will be more likely to worry about them.

It is easy to let your self go out of control with worry when your pet is not acting normally. What you need to do is make sure to research any questions that you have.

There is no shame in not knowing the answer to something. The only shame there should be is when you are too afraid to confront a problematic question.

Dogs are notorious for panting. There are several reasons that they may be panting when you catch them in the act. If you have had your pet for a while, you will probably get familiar with their habits. This makes it very easy to notice when things change suddenly.

If you have a pet that pants fairly often normally who suddenly stops, it is worrying. There are a few things that you should do if you think that there is something wrong with your pet.

You will need to verify that there is an actual medical emergency by examining your pet. Here are a few tips on how to handle this situation.

Consider whether this behavior suddenly appeared or was it already there

So if you have a pet and you notice that they are not panting, ask yourself a question. Has your pet always behaved this way, or is this a new behavior?

Depending on the way that you answer this question will determine how much you should worry. If you have a brand-new pet and are unfamiliar with their habits, it may be nothing at all.

The best course of action, in this case, is to ensure they are comfortable and keep a close eye on them. If, on the other hand, you have a pet that normally pants but isn’t anymore, you might be valid in worrying.

If your pet has suddenly stopped painting, this could potentially be a sign that there is something wrong with them. You should still verify that they are comfortable and not displaying signs of distress before moving on.

Call your veterinarian to ask if there is anything that is wrong with your pet

Now, if you have discovered that your pet is displaying some signs of discomfort, you should call your veterinarian. When you talk to them, you should ask them if they noticed any kind of pre-existing condition.

If you are lucky, the veterinarian will be able to tell you over the phone what it is. Hopefully, they will be able to tell you that it is not anything to worry about. Otherwise, you may need to schedule an appointment to have your pet examined for anything that could be wrong.

Check the temperature to make sure that it is comfortable for your pet

One of the biggest reasons dogs pants is because they are hot. If you noticed that your pet is no longer panting, you should check the temperature of your house.

It could be that they are simply not hot and do not need to pant ever. So, if that is the reason, then you can take them to get more exercise, and they should start panting right away.

If your pet is cold you may want to give them a blanket or clothing

If you notice that it is pretty cold where you are, and there is a chance that your pet is cold. This is particularly common. You have a smaller pet.

One of the easiest solutions for this problem is a blanket. You can also give them a shirt if you have one that fits. Either way, as long as you can get them to feel a little bit warmer, everything will work out fine.

Once your pet is hot again, they should be back to their normal panting behaviors. Notice that this behavior has continued to persist even after they warmed up, then you should call your veterinarian again.

You will probably take them to the veterinarian to check to look and see whether there is anything wrong. This is an unlikely scenario, though, so you probably still do not have much of a reason to worry.

Your pet may feel intimidated by you

Sometimes dogs will freeze up entirely if they feel intimidated. Owners are unaware of the effect that they have on their dogs a lot of the time.

You may not have realized it, but something that you are doing could be intimidating your pet. Ask yourself if you have changed anything lately. If you have changed something lately, compare that to when you notice your pet’s behavior changed.

If they are fairly close together in time, then they are most likely related. You can try to help comfort your pet to get over this intimidation.

There is another option too. You can also pinpoint what it is that is causing them to feel intimidated and modify it. Once the object, behavior, or smell that is intimidating your pet is gone, they should go back to normal pretty quickly.

Your pet may just not pant all that often

Sometimes when your pet is not panting, it does not mean anything at all. Not all dogs pant all of the time. Most of them will whenever they get hot. However, just because you are feeling hot does not mean that they do.

Different dogs have different temperature tolerances and will pant at different times. If it is brought to your attention that your pet is not panting very much for even not panting at all, it could be nothing.

You may just simply have a pet that does not need to or want to pant all that often. If you are still concerned, and you have not taken them to the veterinarian, yet do now is a great time to do so.
