9 Tips if Your Puppy Doesn’t Want to Eat or Drink

There is always a chance that things will not go perfectly when you adopt a new dog. No matter how excited you are, once you get home, there is always an element of chance.

It can be very stressful to discover that your new dog is having problems adjusting. All you want to do is provide them with a good quality of life. Yet, for some unknown reason, your new puppy is refusing to eat or drink anything.

You are probably wondering what it is that you did wrong? The truth of the matter is that you probably did not do anything. When a new puppy is adjusting to a new home, there are many things that can cause them to refuse to do.

It is important for you to identify and diagnose the cause of the problem. This way, you will actually be able to do something about it.

Before you take your dog to the vet, there are a few things to look out for. Here are some of the most important things to look for when you are dealing with a situation like this.

You have taught your puppy to be a picky eater

Some puppies are more finicky than others naturally, but all of them can be taught to be. If you acquiesce to your puppy’s incessant demands, then you will teach them that they can get what they want.

If you have been a little too lenient with your new puppy, the reason they are not eating could be that they do not like the food. It is difficult to live with a dog that is a picky eater.

You need to readjust your expectations when working with your dog. You will have to stop giving in to their demands immediately.

Once they are hungry enough, they should eat the food that you have given them unless there is something more seriously wrong with them.

You might need to help your puppy destress

Moving to a new home can be incredibly stressful for a puppy. When a puppy is under stress, it can suppress their appetites. If your puppy is under enough stress due to the new movie, it can cause anorexia.

The stress should reduce over time as they gradually adjust to their new environment. You should still try to be proactive and help them destress more quickly. Make sure that your dog feels comfortable and gets plenty of attention throughout the day.

Your dog may your help to cool off

Sometimes whenever a dog is hot, they also will not eat anything. Paradoxically they also may not drink anything either. If it is very warm where your dog normally for drinks, that could be what is causing them to stop.

Trying to readjust the temperature so that it is more tolerable for your animal. Once the place that they eat is a little more comfortable than they should resume eating. If they do not, you should probably take them to the vet right away.

Your puppy’s mouth may be sore from teething

Depending on how old your puppy is, they could be in pain from teething. When a puppy is going through teething, they will often stop eating.

This is because it is painful for them to chew on order food right now. You can help them out by trying to feed them meat-based baby food. This is much easier for puppies to digest when they are teething.

There is a chance that your puppy has an illness

If your puppy has an illness like distemper or parvovirus, it can also suppress their appetite. Most of the time, there will be additional symptoms associated with these conditions.

If the only symptom that you have noticed is that your dog is refusing to eat, they are probably healthy.

The only way for you to truly know, however, is to go to the vet. If you suspect that your puppy has some type of illness, then take them to the vet as soon as possible.

Take your dog to the vet to check for any parasites

In addition to bacteria and viruses, there are also parasites that can cause your dog’s appetite to be suppressed.

There are several types of intestinal parasites and worms that will disrupt your dog’s ability to eat and digest food. Again the answer to this situation is a trip to the vet’s office.

Try feeding your dog in a quiet area

Dogs who are very young can be overwhelmed very easily. If they are eating in an area that is subject to very loud noises, it can be scary.

Try to move their feeding room somewhere that is quieter. You can try to put the ball in a bathroom or a closet, for example.

Eating in a quiet area that is small and secure will help to calm your dog while they are eating. Once your dog feels better about their feeding spot, they should go back to normal fairly quickly.

Try to offer them some cooked meat

Sometimes in order to stimulate appetite, you will need to offer up some food that is especially appetizing.

Dogs, in general, love cooked meat. You have a dog that is refusing to eat, and you are starting to get worried try offering them some grilled chicken.

Most of the time, if a picky eater eats a little bit, they will eat more regardless of what it is.

Warm-up your puppies food

This is in the same vein of thought as the tip above. If you put your puppies food in the microwave for 30 seconds to warm it up a little, it is more appetizing.

Heating up the food will cause more of the aroma to be released. Dogs have a much stronger sense of smell than us.

Taste in humans is already primarily based on smell. You can imagine how warming up the food must make it a little more palatable to your puppy. If none of these suggestions work in, you will need to take them to the vet to get out.
