Does Your Puppy Yelp All Night? When to Worry

Most parents already understand the pain of being kept awake by a screaming infant. However, plenty of people who are thinking about adopting a dog do not realize they may be facing the same issue soon.

Puppies are notoriously needy whenever they are very young. It is not uncommon for them to keep you awake for long periods of time by crying at night.

If you have found your self with a puppy that will not stop crying, you know how frustrating it can be.

This type of behavior can seriously impact your quality of life. It can hamper your ability to get a full night’s rest, and this can bleed into other areas of your life.

We are going to show you what you need to do if you are having issues with your puppy like this. There are many reasons that they could be displaying similar behavior. Most of the time, there is a simple solution that you can use to immediately resolve the problem.

Sometimes there is a little bit more of a complication, though. Let’s go ahead and look at this problem in a little more detail and see what there is you can do about it.

Try to let them sleep with you in your room instead of alone

If you have just adopted your puppy and you are trying to put them asleep in a room by themselves, they could feel lonely. People are not the only creatures that are capable of experiencing loneliness.

Plenty of dogs are able to experience this emotion, as well. If you notice that your puppy is only crying whenever you have left the room that they sleep in, this is probably the reason they are crying.

One of the easiest solutions is to try and move them into the bedroom that you sleep in. They do not need to sleep on the bed with you. Simply being in the same room as you at night can be a huge help.

Let them sleep with another pet to keep them company

Another thing that you can do if they are crying because they are lonely at night is to let another pet sleep with them. If you already have another pet that gets along with your new puppy, they can help to keep them company.

This should keep them from feeling lonely and help to limit the amount of crying. As they get older, they should be more comfortable sleeping on their own.

Put their favorite toy in their bed with them

If you do not have another patch that you can put in the bed with them, you can try to put their favorite toy in there instead.

Since puppies have such a strong sense of smell, a familiar toy can be very comforting to them. If you would like to avoid letting them sleep in your room at night, this could be a good option if you don’t have a pet to keep them company.

Try to give them some over-the-counter dog calming supplements

If you have tried several things and there is still no solution that seems to work, then you can try over-the-counter supplements. There are a few different types of supplements that you can get.

All of them will help to work on your dog’s anxiety. Some of them are actually pretty effective and will help your dog sleep through the night. Just go to your local pet store and asked the person behind the counter for help.

They should be able to point you in the right direction. Try one of these supplements out on your dog for a month. By the end of that month, you should have noticed a significant improvement.

Your dog could be afraid of something, and you need to soothe them

One of the primary reasons that a puppy would be crying at night time is because they are afraid of something. They do not necessarily need to be afraid of something rational.

Dogs are capable of having a rational fear just as well as humans are. You can try to go into the room they sleep and calm them down. If they were afraid, then once they are feeling less anxious, they should stop barking.

Your puppy could be in pain from an injury they received

One of the other major reasons that a puppy might start crying is because of pain. There is a chance that your puppy has hurt themselves, and that is why they are crying.

If they have hurt themselves, it does not always need to be something that is visible to the naked eye. If you suspect that they may have hurt themselves, then the best course of action is to get them to a vet.

A vet is going to be able to assist you more thoroughly with this type of problem.

You may have forgotten to feed your puppy before bed tonight

Finally, one of the other major reasons that a puppy might cry is because they are hungry or thirsty. We all have busy lives, and it is easy to forget things that are important to do.

If you forgot to feed your puppy before bed, then it is no surprise that they are crying.

They are probably starving and need to get some food in their bellies. You can try to give them some food, and if they are hungry, they should eat it right away. Afterward, they should have no problem going to sleep.

You may need to take your puppy out to the bathroom before you put them to bed

Puppies need to go to the bathroom far more often than you realize. If you do not take your puppy to the bathroom right before bed, then you need to start doing this.

You may have been putting your puppy to sleep with a stomach that is full. The dog will need to go to the bathroom and relieve themselves before they can rest comfortably.

This should help to stop the crying as soon as they have gone to the bathroom. They should have no problem laying down and going to bed.
